Homemade Foot Scrub

Something completely different...

Flip-flop season is nearly here. Super!
It's fun to pamper your feet sometimes with a nice foot scrub. Store-bought scrubs can be pricey, and I don't know about you, but I tend to feel a little silly buying something that's sole purpose is foot-scrubbing. A few weeks ago, I came up with an easy-to-make scrub that uses ingredients most people have at home. It works excellently, exfoliating and softening the skin on your feet and your hands as you apply it.

The recipe involves coarse salt, baking soda, vegetable oil (or canola oil), and peppermint extract. The coarse salt and baking soda remove dead skin cells, and the oil softens the skin. The peppermint extract adds a very nice scent to the mixture. You can use any type of scented extract or essential oil, or you could substitute a teaspoon or so of a nicely scented shower gel / body wash.

Notes: Be careful if you have any open cuts on your hands or feet because the salt will sting like crazy if you rub it in them.
Be certain to wash out the shower or tub with soap and water after using the foot scrub. The oil will make it very slippery. The directions below also instruct that you wash your feet and hands with soap and water after using the scrub--use your favorite shampoo or shower gel.

Homemade Foot Scrub

Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons coarse salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • Few drops peppermint extract

Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, combine all ingredients, stirring together with a small spatula or spoon.
  2. Massage mixture onto feet over a basin, shower, or bathtub.
  3. When finished, rinse well with soap and water. (*Also rinse the basin, shower, or tub with soap and water to remove the oil.)
  4. Thoroughly moisturize feet and hands with lotion.
Leftovers of this mixture can probably be stored for a few months in an airtight container.

Enjoy!

Cool! It doesn't work wonders, but it does make your feet feel softer. And it's fun. :)
